LaMelo Ball has had quite the journey to get to this point. And Ball is one of the most interesting and hyped prospects in quite a while. His story has been heavily documented since he was just a Freshman in high school. Since then, he has played professionally in Lithuania as a 16 year old, played in the JBA league for 18-20 year old players, and then most recently played in the NBL in Australia, which many say is the second best league in the world. LaMelo started off quiet in the NBL but had back to back triple doubles and a 32 point game while providing many highlights along the way. He may be the most talented prospect in this draft as he is a 6-8 point guard who is a tremendous playmaker and passer as well as scorer.
Bob Meyers, the general manager of the Warriors, has already made a visit to Australia to scout LaMelo Ball first hand. Many believe that the Warriors will end up with the top pick in the 2020 NBA draft and it would be hard to pass on Ball due to the talent and potential. Ball could be one of those special players that teams regret not drafting such as Luka Doncic when he was passed up to go third in the 2018 draft.
The main concern for Ball though is his defense but it could be well hidden on the Warriors as they have hidden Curry in the past with great team defense and individual defenders in Thompson and Green. Ball also is an inconsistent shooter and takes a lot of tough and poor shots. In addition to Ball, there are other players in consideration for the number one pick, most notably James Wiseman. Wiseman had an insane start to his college career at Memphis averaging 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks in just 23 minutes per game before being suspended after just 3 games.
Other teams looking to draft Ball have been rumored to be the Cavaliers and Pelicans. The Cavs have reportedly “heavily scouted” LaMelo Ball and could possess a top 5 pick in 2020. Cleveland looks at Ball as a potential Lebron type player with elite athleticsm, height, playmaking ability, passing ability, and an effortless scorer. We will have to wait and see where and when LaMelo goes in the 2020 draft but wherever he goes will get maybe the most talented player in the class.
